3M Lava Zirconia from Your 3Shape Dental Wings or Lava ST Scanner

It is a very exciting time for digital dentistry indeed. Now, after much anticipation, dental laboratories can send their digital dental restoration design files for Lava crowns using a 3Shape and DentalWings scanners in addition to the Lava ST scanner by 3M.

Lava zirconia crowns and bridges can be sent for remote milling using the following dental scanners:

Lava ST Scanner
3Shape Scanner
DentalWings Scanner

Getting started is easy. 

For 3Shape Scanners

3Shape Scanner Models D250, D640, D700 and D710 can all generate the 3M scan/design output for Lava zirconia, provided this feature is not disabled by your reseller.

Installation:  3Shape Scanners

  • 1. Request your 3Shape reseller to send you the “LavaMaterial ver 4_0.dme” and to enable the 3M lava output on the dongle.
  • 2. Install the 3Shape Dental System 2.5.12 or higher. If already installed, update the dongle in the 3Shape Control Panel/Dongle/Internet Update.
  • 3. Obtain the “LavaMaterial ver 4-0.dme” files and import all materials using 3Shape Control Panel/Imports-Export Material/Import. Accept all materials. It is critical that the import is successful.

How to Generate 3Shape Design Output for 3M Lava Materials

  • 1. Create a new order in DentalManager, select indication and the Lava material “Lava zirconia”
  • 2. Perform the scanning as usual. The Lava quality regarding fit or restoration can only be ensured with a perfect and highly precise scan of the die cut model.
  • 3. Perform the Cad design as usual using suggested Lava Material settings. Please note the warning in your CAD Software for wall thickness, connector dimensions etc. are not necessarily applicable for Lava restorations. The requirements are described in the instruction for use “Lava Network Open Interface.”
  • 4. After completing the CAD design, click on the order in DentalManager and create Lava output file(generate Cam output). This file (ULDC file) can be found in the normal manufacturing output folder(<shift> F4 in DentalManager on the order).
  • 5. The ULDC file can then be imported into Lava Design software using the Lava CAD import workflow.

For DentalWings Scanner

Dental Wings scanners 5-Series and DentalWings scanner 3-Series can all generate the 3M scan/design output Lava zirconia, provided this feature is not disabled by your reseller. Lava Design 5.40 or higher will be required.

Installation: DWOS Scanner

Install the DWOS Software Version 2.5.0.10431 or higher. All specific parameters will be material driven, no need to install further files. In the material management application view you should see three 3M branded material.

Generate DWOS DESIGN output for 3M Lava

Perform the following steps to generate a DWOS design output:

  • 1. Create a new order using the order receiving application-New sale order.
  • 2. Select indication and the Lava material-”Lava zirconia.”
  • 3. Perform the scanning as usual. The Lava quality regarding fit or restoration can only be ensured with a perfect and highly precise scan of die cut model.
  • 4. Perform the Cad design as usual using suggested Lava Material settings. Please note the warning in your CAD Software for wall thickness, connector dimensions etc. are not necessarily applicable for Lava restorations. The requirements are described in the instruction for use “Lava Network Open Interface.”
  • 5. After completing the CAD design, click on the 3M Export Button in the 3D view or click the order in Administration and export order to create Lava output file. This file (ULDC file) can be saved in the normal output file.
  • 6. The ULDC file can then be imported into Lava Design software using the Lava CAD import workflow.

Send Your File to Dale Dental by Lava Connect or Dale Web File Transfer Systems

3M ESPE and Dale Dental offer a free of charge high secure date transfer platform for sending ULDC files to Dale Dental.

If sending your file using the Dale Web system,  you must register at www.DaleDental.com/Order
If sending your file using Lava Connect, you must register at www.3MESPE.com/LavaNetwork

Once registration is complete, you can start sending your Lava design files as follows:

  • 1. Open the link to the LavaConnect or Dale Web transfer platform using IE 5 or higher. To simplify the process for next time, you can create a shortcut to your desktop.
  • 2. Login with your username and password.
  • 3. Please complete your personal settings after your first login. For Lava Connect, please also change your password.
  • 4. Now you can upload the ULDC filing using the appropriate function in the menu. When using Dale Web, you may also indicate your return date and shade as well as add multiple Lava ULDC files with notes to your case.
  • 5. When using Lava Connect, you must also select Dale Dental as the Lava Milling Center.
